I have a fresh install about 80% complete and I was going to start testing the virtualmerchat gateway. They require an audit of site before an account can be completed. I have the site off while adding content and tweaking. So is there a way that a user can be created that can access site while off-line without giving super user rights? I've looked at the adding roles but I'm unsure if I can create a role to access site while offline and not give them any admin rights.

The permission needed to get past the "site offline" message is "administer site configuration", which lets you do just about anything to your Drupal settings.

I would try to migrate what you have over to a test site that you don't mind them breaking. As long as it's obvious that you aren't really taking orders there, you can ignore anybody trying to buy something, and hopefully still get credit for the audit.

So the answer is- you cannot give a user role permission to get past offline status without giving admin rights. thanks...
