Why change all attributes?
I think it would be nice to add HS as a different kind of attribute. So standard attribute and HS attribute.
It would just need a new HS_attribute module and leave the decision of what to use to the user.

Or am I missing something? The old attribute is also something like a contrib. It just hooks into the product form and cart display.
